Its mainstay is a lightly salted plain cracker, the kind Filipinos tuck into a bag before heading out. School snacks (baon), a companion to coffee, emergency food in typhoons and other disasters, a late-night bite when a little hungry: a running partner that shows up in every scene of life. Cheese, peanut butter, coco jam, anything goes on top, so much so that the phrase “Kahit anong ipatong” (whatever you put on it) is famous. The red, white and blue packaging carries a good old-fashioned classic feel.

On happy days and lonely nights, it was always there.
